The scariest dream sequence in horror history is in Rosemary’s Baby. You know the one. The scene when Mia Farrow’s completely lovable Rosemary Woodhouse is raped in the night by — you guessed it — Satan. It’s just so… dark, and cruel, and nightmarish. And the way she wakes up with the scratches all over her, undoubtedly put there by the (apparently very frisky, but who isn’t from time to time?) Prince of Darkness himself, is just so damn creepy.
The imagery of the dream is blurry and, at times, almost indiscernible. It’s an intentional artistic choice by director Roman Polanski and, for the record, a very good one. Polanski, whose films Repulsion and (of course) this one you should check out immediately if you never have before, is as talented a “horror” guy as you’ll ever find and this film is probably his finest work. Rosemary’s Baby is scary, it’s funny, it’s suspenseful, and it’s totally, completely, entirely brilliant. It’s a true classic of the genre and I really can’t even begin to tell you how much I dig it. It’s finally coming to blu-ray next month and I really need a copy.
